Genève / ONU : Les États critiquent la Chine pour ses pensionnats coercitifs au Tibet lors de l’examen de l’ONU

China’s human rights review concluded on Tuesday and it was a good day for Tibet!

We applaud the 20 UN Member States who raised Tibet, and in particular, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States for recommending China abolish the coercive boarding school system intended to forcibly assimilate Tibetan children.

This year saw more than double the number of recommendations about Tibet compared to China’s last review five years ago, showing governments are willing to hold Beijing accountable. The dramatic increase underscores the existential threat China’s assimilationist policies pose to the Tibetan people and shows that our advocacy is working.

Dr Gyal Lo and I are still on the ground in Geneva and you can watch our quick update here: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=290080017043057

China’s response to the concerns about the boarding system was – as always – to simply blame Tibet’s vast landscape and high altitude, proving once again that they have no valid justification for separating 1 million Tibetan children from their families.
We thank everyone who signed the petition in the lead up to China’s review, lobbied their governments, shared our report on the colonial boarding schools, and kept their support for Tibet strong. Today has shown us that the Tibet issue is a global concern once again and that together we can turn up the pressure on the Chinese government to end the atrocious colonial boarding school system in Tibet.
