Hommage au Professeur Robert A. F. Thurman
L’association France-Tibet s’associe avec émotion aux paroles de Sa Sainteté le Dalaï-Lama à l’occasion du départ de son ami de longue date, le Professeur Robert A. F. Thurman. Nous garderons le souvenir d’un homme exceptionnel, écrivain, universitaire et grand passeur de la pensée bouddhiste. Premier Occidental ordonné moine par Sa Sainteté le Dalaï-Lama en 1964, Robert Thurman a consacré sa vie à l’étude, à l’enseignement et à la transmission de la culture tibétaine. Pour France-Tibet, il fut également une voix fidèle et engagée en faveur d’un Tibet libre. Dès les années 1970, il a porté avec conviction la cause du peuple tibétain, contribuant à faire connaître sa culture, son histoire et ses aspirations à travers le monde. France-Tibet lui garde une gratitude particulière pour les moments qu’il nous a consacrés à Paris, venant personnellement à notre rencontre afin d’encourager et de soutenir notre engagement pour la cause tibétaine. Comme l’a rappelé Sa Sainteté le Dalaï-Lama, son œuvre, son érudition et son engagement continueront d’inspirer les générations futures. Son héritage intellectuel, spirituel et humain demeure vivant. En ce moment de séparation, nos pensées les plus sincères vont à son épouse Nena, à sa famille, à ses proches et à tous ceux qui ont eu le privilège de croiser son chemin et de bénéficier de sa sagesse, de sa générosité et de son amitié. Comme ceux et celles d’entre nous qui croyons à la réincarnation, nous ne lui disons pas adieu, mais un heureux au revoir. Merci, Professeur Thurman, et au revoir dans la lumière ! Avec notre profonde gratitude et notre affection.

Homage to Professor Robert A. F. Thurman
The France-Tibet Association joins with deep emotion in the words of His Holiness the Dalai Lama on the passing of his long-time friend, Professor Robert A. F. Thurman. We will remember an exceptional man, a writer, scholar, and great transmitter of Buddhist thought. The first Westerner to be ordained as a monk by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1964, Robert Thurman dedicated his life to the study, teaching, and preservation of Tibetan culture and wisdom. For France-Tibet, he was also a steadfast and committed voice for a Free Tibet. Beginning in the 1970s, he devoted himself to the Tibetan cause, helping to make its culture, history, and aspirations known throughout the world. France-Tibet remains especially grateful for the time he spent with us in Paris, personally coming to meet us and encourage our commitment to the Tibetan cause. As His Holiness the Dalai Lama has reminded us, his work, scholarship, and dedication will continue to inspire future generations. His intellectual, spiritual, and human legacy lives on. In this time of separation, our most heartfelt thoughts are with his wife Nena, his family, his loved ones, and all those who had the privilege of crossing paths with him and benefiting from his wisdom, generosity, and friendship. Like those among us who believe in rebirth, we do not say goodbye to him, but rather a joyful farewell until we meet again. Thank you, Professor Thurman, and may your journey continue in the light. With our deepest gratitude and affection.
