The event featured discussions on Tibet-related issues, a cultural programme, and a meeting with local officials, including Pau Mayor Jérôme Marbot.

The Tibet Day celebration began at around 10:30 a.m. in Pau. During the event, Sangay Kyab spoke about the historical relations between France and Tibet.

Speaking on the occasion, he said, “France and Tibet have a long history. In 1907, a Tibetan Bonpo monk named Adrup Gonpo, who was a guide for Tibetologist Jacques Bator, spent a year in Paris and other places in France, becoming the first-ever Tibetan to visit the country. Moreover, from the perspective of Tibetan culture, French researchers brought ancient Tibetan manuscripts from Dunhuang, allowing us today to see authentic Tibetan history and rare ancient manuscripts.”

He further noted that following China’s occupation of Tibet in 1959, relations between Tibetans and the French people grew increasingly close, leading to the emergence of numerous French organisations supporting the Tibetan cause. “This kind of organisation is especially important. Thank you all for your support and assistance until now,” he said.

At 11:30 a.m., Sangay Kyab delivered a speech addressing a range of Tibet-related topics, including “transnational repression,” the so-called “Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress Law,” and a book by Professor Hon-Shiang Lau that argues that Tibet has never been part of China since antiquity. He also responded to questions concerning the situation inside Tibet and the broader Tibet issue.

At 12:30 p.m., Sangay Kyab met with Pau Mayor Jérôme Marbot and his secretary to discuss issues concerning Tibetans and the Tibetan people. During the meeting, he noted that a number of Tibetans reside in Pau and expressed appreciation for the support and assistance provided by the city government to the local Tibetan community.

He called for continued support, noting that the French government and people have provided longstanding support for the Tibetan cause. He said that continued support remains important for the preservation and survival of the Tibetan people and their culture. On behalf of Tibetans, he expressed gratitude to the French government and people for their continued support.

Mayor Jérôme Marbot said, “I have been interested in Tibet and Tibetan culture for a long time, and I will do my best to provide any necessary assistance to Tibetans in the local area in the future. I am very happy to have met you today, and I will support the Tibet cause as much as I can.”

As part of the Tibet Day programme, Tibetan artist Tashi displayed his thangka paintings, while Tibetan and foreign participants delivered speeches and performed songs related to Tibet. The programme provided attendees with an opportunity to learn about Tibetan culture and the situation in Tibet.

APACT has supported the Mainpat Tibetan Settlement in India and Tibetan Children’s Village for many years.
