New Czech Senate resolution challenges China’s interferences in Dalai Lama’s succession

The Senate of the Czech Republic last month adopted a resolution opposing Chinese interference in the
succession of the Dalai Lama and affirming the Tibetan people’s right to choose their own spiritual leader.
The resolution, adopted on March 25 with 40 votes in favor and none opposed, clearly states that the People’s Republic of China has no legitimate authority to select the successor to the 14th Dalai Lama, and calls on the Czech government to support the Tibetan people’s free choice of the 15th Dalai Lama. It also expresses grave concern over China’s recently adopted Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress, which the Senate described as an instrument “openly advocating assimilation” that restricts cultural, religious and linguistic freedoms, including for Tibetans.
Wangpo Tethong, Executive Director of ICT Europe, welcomed the adoption of the resolution, stating: “With this resolution, the Czech Senate has made clear that Czech support for Tibet remains steadfast. It sends a strong signal that the selection of the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation is solely the prerogative of the Tibetan people, and that Beijing’s unacceptable attempts to control it will face international scrutiny.”
The adoption of this resolution reflects a collective effort, made possible through the sustained engagement of Tibet support groups like Czechs Support Tibet, as well as the Office of Tibet in Geneva and committed Czech parliamentarians.
With this move, the Czech Senate joins a growing list of governments and parliaments that have publicly affirmed Tibetan religious freedom and the right of Tibetans to determine their spiritual leadership, including in the United States, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and the European Union. In July 2025, UN independent human rights experts expressed their concern over the Chinese government’s stated intention to appoint a person of their choice as the next Dalai Lama.
The resolution is the latest expression of the Czech people’s longstanding solidarity with Tibet, illustrated by regular parliamentary delegations’ visits to Dharamshala, India (the seat of the Central Tibetan Administration) and an historic meeting between Czech President Petr Pavel and His Holiness the Dalai Lama in India in July 2025.
The recent re-establishment of the Czech parliamentary group for Tibet following elections further demonstrates sustained and broad-based political support for Tibet and a renewed commitment to stand firmly with the Tibetan people in their struggle for freedom and justice.

Le Sénat de la République tchèque a adopté le mois dernier une résolution s’opposant à l’ingérence chinoise dans la succession du dalaï-lama et affirmant le droit du peuple tibétain à choisir son propre chef spirituel.
La résolution, adoptée le 25 mars par 40 voix pour et aucune contre, stipule clairement que la République populaire de Chine n’a aucune autorité légitime pour désigner le successeur du 14e dalaï-lama et appelle le gouvernement tchèque à soutenir le libre choix du 15e dalaï-lama par le peuple tibétain. Elle exprime également de vives préoccupations concernant la loi récemment adoptée par la Chine sur la promotion de l’unité et du progrès ethniques, que le Sénat a qualifiée d’instrument « prônant ouvertement l’assimilation » et restreignant les libertés culturelles, religieuses et linguistiques, y compris
pour les Tibétains.
Wangpo Tethong, directeur exécutif d’ICT Europe, s’est félicité de l’adoption de la résolution, déclarant : « Par cette résolution, le Sénat tchèque a clairement indiqué que le soutien de la République tchèque au Tibet demeure inébranlable. Elle envoie un signal fort : le choix de la réincarnation du dalaï-lama est la prérogative exclusive du peuple tibétain, et les tentatives inacceptables de Pékin pour le contrôler feront l’objet d’un examen international. »
L’adoption de cette résolution témoigne d’un effort collectif, rendu possible grâce à l’engagement constant des groupes de soutien au Tibet tels que Czechs Support Tibet, ainsi que du Bureau du Tibet à Genève et de parlementaires tchèques engagés.
Par cette décision, le Sénat tchèque rejoint la liste croissante des gouvernements et parlements qui ont publiquement affirmé la liberté religieuse des Tibétains et leur droit de choisir leur chef spirituel, notamment aux États-Unis, en Allemagne, en Belgique, aux Pays-Bas et au sein de l’Union européenne. En juillet 2025, des experts indépendants des Nations Unies en matière de droits de l’homme ont exprimé leur inquiétude face à l’intention déclarée du gouvernement chinois de nommer une personne de son choix comme prochain dalaï-lama.
Cette résolution est la dernière manifestation en date de la solidarité de longue date du peuple tchèque avec le Tibet, illustrée par les visites régulières de délégations parlementaires à Dharamshala, en Inde (siège de l’Administration centrale tibétaine), et par la rencontre historique entre le président tchèque Petr Pavel et Sa Sainteté le dalaï-lama en Inde en juillet 2025.
Le rétablissement récent du groupe parlementaire tchèque pour le Tibet, suite aux élections, témoigne une fois de plus du soutien politique constant et large apporté au Tibet et d’un engagement renouvelé à soutenir fermement le peuple tibétain dans sa lutte pour la liberté et la justice.
