Liu Xiaobo et moi ne nous sommes rencontrés qu’une seule fois, mais nous étions amis et nous nous admirions. Liu Xiaobo est mort dans la lutte interne du Parti communiste chinois (PCC) et est mort en prison, ce qui était à la fois inattendu et triste. Il était engagé depuis longtemps dans l’œuvre de la démocratie et de la liberté en Chine et était pour nous un bon camarade et ami.
Parce qu’il s’est incliné devant le PCC alors qu’il était en prison et a menti contre sa volonté, il a été critiqué par de nombreux amis. Il a écrit un livre pour le confesser et a été pardonné par les autres. Il m’a avoué en personne qu’il n’était pas si courageux et qu’il a dû se rendre à la police chinoise. Nous n’avons donc pas besoin de nier sa contribution à la cause de la démocratie et de la liberté. Tout le monde a des faiblesses, mais ses réalisations ne peuvent pas être effacées pour cette raison. Cependant, ses faiblesses ne doivent pas être sanctifiées, créant des illusions pour ceux qui lui succéderont et donnant le mauvais exemple.
Certains disent qu’il a remporté le prix Nobel de la paix à ma place, ce qui est soit de l’ignorance, soit une incitation à la discorde. En raison de l’infiltration du PCC dans les cercles politiques, commerciaux et universitaires occidentaux, j’étais destiné à ne pas remporter le prix. Le fait que Liu Xiaobo ait remporté le prix a donné un grand encouragement à la faction démocratique dans la lutte, et ce fut un événement très positif. C’est la principale raison pour laquelle nous commémorons encore Liu Xiaobo.
Enfin, je voudrais remercier les amis qui ont organisé cet événement, afin que nous puissions poursuivre la cause de la liberté et de la démocratie que Liu Xiaobo n’a pas achevée.

Speech in Commemoration of the 7th Anniversary of Liu Xiaobo’s Death

Liu Xiaobo and I only met once, but we were friends who admired each other. Liu Xiaobo died in the internal struggle of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and died in prison, which was both unexpected and sad. He had been engaged in the work of democracy and freedom in China for a long time, and was a good comrade and friend of ours.
Because he bowed to the CCP while in prison and told some lies against his will, he was criticized by many friends. He wrote a book to confess this and was forgiven by the others. He admitted to me in person that he was not so brave and had to surrender to the Chinese police. Therefore, we do not need to deny his contribution to the cause of democracy and freedom. Everyone has weaknesses, but his achievements cannot be erased because of this. However, his weaknesses should not be sanctified, creating illusions for those who come after him and setting a bad example.
Some people say that he won the Nobel Peace Prize in my place, which is either ignorant or instigating discord. Due to the infiltration of the CCP into the political, business and academic circles in the West, I was destined not to win the prize. Liu Xiaobo’s winning of the prize gave great encouragement to the democratic faction in the struggle, and it was a very positive event. This is the main reason why we still commemorate Liu Xiaobo.
Finally, I would like to thank the friends who organized this event, so that we can continue the cause of freedom and democracy that Liu Xiaobo did not complete.

在刘晓波逝世七周年纪念会上的发言

我和刘小波只有一面之缘，但也是彼此欣赏的朋友。刘晓波死于中共的内斗，而且死于监狱之中，让人感到既意外也很悲痛。他长期从事中国的民主自由工作，是我们的一位好同道，好朋友。
由于他在监狱中向共产党低头了，说了一些违心的假话，而受到很多朋友的批评。这个他自己写书做过了忏悔，也得到了大家的谅解。他自己当面对我承认他没那么勇敢，不得不向警察屈服。因此我们不必因此否认他对民主自由事业的贡献。每个人都有弱点，但不能因此抹杀他的功绩。但也不应该把他的弱点神圣化，给后来者造成错觉，造成坏的榜样。
有人说他顶替我获得了诺贝尔和平奖，这是不明就里或挑拨离间。由于中共对西方政商学界的渗透，我注定不会得奖。而刘晓波得奖给予斗争中的民主派以极大的鼓舞，是一件非常正面的事件。这是至今我们仍然纪念刘晓波的主要原因。
最后感谢组织活动的朋友们，让我们继续刘晓波没完成的自由民主事业。
